Our heritage

Blackwell Funerals founder Frank William Blackwell started his career as a coffin maker. In 1939, he set up a funeral home and a couple of years later, his son, Daryl, started working with him at the age of 16.

Before his death in 2010, Daryl Blackwell penned the following:

I’ve always thought of this profession as not so much a job, but as a lifelong pursuit. You deal with so much of humanity that you can’t help feeling challenged, fulfilled, devastated, enriched and eternally lucky.

When I’m asked why I do what I do, I share real stories, such as the time a woman whose husband had died came to see me. It was clear she hadn’t accepted her husband had died, so I suggested she come back the next day, which she did. I took that dear lady by the arm and led her to view her late husband. She stood there in complete silence for a minute or more, then broke down.

Then the most beautiful thing happened…she spoke to him, recalling their life together, their joy, and love, saying that she would never stop loving him. Then she left.

A day later I asked her if viewing her husband had helped in any way. She threw her arms around me and said “I’ll never forget you”.

And I never forgot that moment.

That’s when everything you’ve given comes back.

Our people

Blackwell Funerals master funeral director, Jason Maher, was fortunate to have worked with Daryl Blackwell.

“It was Daryl who taught me to ‘go out of your way to serve the family until it hurts’. This is the foundation of what makes Blackwell Funerals different to any other funeral business,” he said.

“We are not focused on one religious group or specific suburb in Adelaide. We are everything to everybody and will guide any family, from any area, with any budget, denomination, or cultural background, through this most difficult time.

“We’ve held services in backyards, the Adelaide Oval, beaches, cathedrals, wineries and likely every church in Adelaide, multiple times.

“We are about serving our community and are always ready when our community needs us.”

Blackwell Funerals is available any time you need us. Contact us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 1300 171 300.
